I had an idea to draw some of my favorite smoothie fruits and vegetables using shapes and rough textures. It was just a small thumbnail sketch on a piece of paper at first. I wanted this to be a stand alone image with a vibrant mix of colors and artful marks. This is my process.
These are the lines and textures I used to create this illustration. The lines on the fruits and veggies were drawn with a 2B pencil and the cup lines were made with a thick brush marker. I scribbled in the textures real quite with a blown out chalk marker.
The process for creating this illustration was first creating the shapes of all the fruits and nailing down the colors of the illustration. That's the most important part. If you don't commit to colors and the structure of the design before you get to far, it's going to be bad news for the rest of the process.
I then started cutting out the textures and applying them to each of the fruit shapes and coloring them accordingly. The final step was coloring all the lines and getting rid of unnecessary lines. As I have said before, I often create more than I need and only use my hand-drawn lines as the framework for my digital shapes.
