I recently created a spot illustration for Road & Track Magazine. It was a small image that accompanied an editorial story. Fun work!
Though the image seems simple enough, there were quite a few layers of drawings and textures that went into it. Here's my process.
This is the sketch that was approved by the art director. I like to make my sketches as finished as possible so that both the art director and I know what is to be expected of the final image.
Going into the final image, I reference my sketch and begin to create the layers of lines and textures. Again, this was a simple image, but there were multiple layers that needed to be drawn separately. Below are the different parts I drew for this illustration.
After applying flat color to the line work of this illustration, I began to place layers of textures on each part and erase unnecessary lines. Below is the final once more.
