Illustration for St. Anthony's Messenger, a nice publication by Franciscan Media. The story is about three people of different age and ethnicity coming together over the shared emotional experience of music.
Above are the sketches I presented to the art director for this story. The prominent elements of the story were the three characters, the young woman playing the violin, the two older men listening and the yellow bouquet of flowers. To generate ideas for sketches, I combined all of these elements with a different emphasis for each sketch.
These are the parts and piece of lines I used to create the final illustration. I like to separate my composition into layers. This way, it is much easier to manage and manipulate digitally. It's also invaluable to create some bits of textures, patterns and art marks for your piece. It breathes a little life into your illustration.
